It's not me, it's you.

Stuff you actually want to read about from Pam Moore

I broke up with a writing client this week. We'd been working together for months, but from Day One I got a bad vibe.

Let me be clear; I don't expect to like every single aspect of everything I do professionally. But this client's expectations were often unclear, the objective of any given assignment were a moving target, and every time I told myself the next assignment would be different... I was wrong.

They weren't truly awful and the hourly rate tended to work out pretty well for me, so I was reluctant to let them go.

But they were taking up time and energy I could have been spending on landing and working with a better client.

It takes some chutzpah to believe a better client will come into your life. Just a couple of hours after this client emailed me to see if they could assign me anything, another email landed in my inbox. It was from a new-to-me editor I forgot I'd even been in touch with, saying she didn't have anything for me right now but that she'd definitely be in touch in the new year.

And BAM just like that, I had the sign I needed to tell me it was okay to let that first client go. (In my next newsletter, I'll share all the phrases I purposely DIDN'T include in that break-up email.)

Here's to letting go of things, people, clients, and habits that don't serve you:)
